Movie Monday: LadyBeard
Although not making it’s West Virginia premiere at the Appalachian Queer Film Festival, our next film in our 2014 lineup is LadyBeard.
This 2013 film was written and directed by West Virginia native, David Smith, and follows, Andy, an aspiring stand up comedian who helps his lesbian best friend Michelle hide her sexual orientation from her conservative parents by pretending to be her boyfriend. When Michelle’s girlfriend proposes to her, Michelle decides that it’s finally time to come out. Fearing that the end of their fake relationship will also mean the end of their friendship, Andy sets out to reluctantly stop her from coming out of the closet.
Winner of the 2013 Best Feature award at the West Virginia Filmmakers Festival, Ladybeard is a hilariously endearing story showcasing Smith’s ability to tackle difficult subject matter through comedy while also maintaining a unique Appalachian tone.
